Throughout the course of his career, Johnny Depp often gets the label of playing the same eccentric character in many of his films — Blow and Transcendence notwithstanding — but for Mortdecai, that aberrant personality fits the bill quite nicely, as the new UK trailer attests.
Stepping into the shoes of Charlie Mortdecai — a roguish art dealer with a fancy for all things expensive — the movie will see Deep’s character search high and wide for an elusive bank code believed to be the key to unlocking a safe filled with long lost Nazi gold.
In this latest clip, we hear the dulcet tones of Stephen Fry guide us through the on-screen mayhem, which tees up the narrative and outrageous tone that we’ve come to expect from Depp when he steps into this brand of action-comedy. For all intents and purposes, his character is a fish out of water, and it’ll be interesting to see the character dynamics between the likes of his wife and ever-reliable helper (played here by Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor, respectively).
Directed by David Koepp (Secret Window, Premium Rush) the film will unite Depp with Paltrow, McGregor, Paul Bettany — for the third time after The Tourist and Transcendence, no less — Olivia Munn, Aubrey Plaza, Oliver Platt, and Jeff Goldblum.
Mortdecai will swagger into theaters on January 23, 2015.
