By this stage, the controversy surrounding Assassin’s Creed: Unity launch is almost inescapable. With all the face-melting bugs and glitches, it became wholly apparent that Ubisoft shipped a game that wasn’t complete, before updating it incrementally with patches in the days and weeks after launch.

It was a trying time for both the studio and its fanbase, and in order to appease those left frustrated by Unity‘s first few days on the market, the French publisher has confirmed that the game’s upcoming story-centric DLC, Dead Kings, will be released free of charge.

Scheduled to arrive for Xbox One and PC on January 13 before launching on PS4 a day later on January 14, the expansion picks up Arno’s journey shortly after the events of Unity‘s campaign. During this time, we see our protagonist venture from Paris for 1794 Saint Denis, an area home to the crypts of dead French Kings — hence the rather morbid title.

Ubisoft confirmed to players that Dead Kings would be free back in November, stating that:

“Unfortunately, at launch, the overall quality of the game was diminished by bugs and unexpected technical issues. I want to sincerely apologize on behalf of Ubisoft and the entire Assassin’s Creed team. These problems took away from your enjoyment of the game, and kept many of you from experiencing the game at its fullest potential.

“To show our appreciation for your continued support, we’re making the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Unity Dead Kings DLC free for everyone. For Season Pass holders, we will also offer the choice of one additional game from a selection of Ubisoft titles for free. More details on the offer for Season Pass holders can be found here: AC Unity FAQ.”

Assassin’s Creed: Unity fans will be pleased to know that Dead Kings will arrive for those on Xbox One and PC on January 13, while PlayStation 4 players will get the free DLC on January 14.
