Although the 1980s will forever be known as the decade of the slasher, Jason Voorhees and his most iconic peers have yet to fade from popularity. Still, despite the fact that 2009’s Friday the 13th remake made a ton of money and cemented its place as the series’ second highest grossing entry, the mask-wearing and machete-wielding killer hasn’t stalked console gamers since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System.
Thankfully, that’s about to change.
In conversation with EGM, Crystal Lake Entertainment CEO Sean S. Cunningham revealed that a new Friday the 13th video game is in the works. Going further, the series’ creator also went on to say that the officially licensed interactive experience is being helmed by a reputable developer, with a targeted 2015 release window.
“With a new television series on the horizon and plans announced for the thirteenth installment of the film franchise, we felt the timing was right to finally explore Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, and the rest of the Friday the 13th story in interactive form,” creator of the original film and CEO of Crystal Lake Entertainment Sean S. Cunningham said.
“We have some exciting new ideas for a game that supplies plenty of replay value, while delivering the kinds of thrills and scares that fans of the franchise have come to expect.”
According to the source, this new Friday the 13th video game will be of the asymmetrical variety, meaning that it’ll pit players against each other in horror-infused competitive multiplayer action. What that means is that the majority of each lobby will get to take control of teen murder bait, while one lucky player will get to step into the shoes of the deformed killer himself. It’s a neat premise, which could work very well if handled properly, but with licensed games’ notorious track records one should avoid getting too hyped over the project. That is, at least until the developer’s identity is made public.
