After bailing on Guillermo Del Toro’s At the Mountains of Madness with Tom Cruise, Universal Pictures will get into business with the Risky Business star for a new sci-fi flick. Horizons comes from TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and is based on the director’s very own comic book series titled Oblivion.

Radical Books describes the comic book story as the following:

From Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski and critically acclaimed creator Arvid Nelson (Rex Mundi) comes an original sci-fi adventure of epic proportions. In a future where the Earth’s surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

Horizons was set up at Disney under the title Oblivion around the time that Kosinski was making TRON: Legacy for the Mouse House. Disney allegedly dropped out because the script by William Monahan pushed the boundaries of the PG-13 rating which is Disney’s comfort zone. Monahan has since been replaced on the project by Karl Gajdusek, writer of the upcoming film Trespass.

Horizons is set to be director Joseph Kosinski’s next film before going to work on another Tron movie. Tom Cruise will take up Horizons after completing work on the Broadway musical adaptation Rock of Ages which is currently filming in Miami, Florida. The actor will next be seen on the big screen in December of 2011 co-starring with Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.
