Anthony Mackie Confirms Falcon’s Allegiance In Captain America: Civil War

The Marvel cinematic universe was shaken to its core in last year's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and will go through an even bigger turn of events in next year's Captain America: Civil War - a storyline that pits Steve Rogers against fellow Avenger Tony Stark. Their power struggle will involve the rest of the superhero team as well, forcing Earth's Mightiest Heroes to choose where their allegiances lie.

We don’t know much about the film just yet, and probably won’t until both Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man hit theaters this summer. However, we do know that a few key players in the MCU are scheduled to appear, including Chris Evans’ Winter Soldier co-stars Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie, who play Black Widow, Bucky Barnes and Falcon, respectively.

Of course, the big question is whether or not they will they stay loyal to Cap, or side with Iron Man? The roles of Black Widow and Bucky are still up in the air, but we now know which side Falcon will fight on thanks to Mackie himself. We spoke with the actor about his new film, Black or White, earlier this week, and managed to ask him where Falcon’s allegiance will be in Civil War.

Here’s what Mackie had to say:

I don’t know. It’s hard. Tony Stark is one cool brother, so I would definitely have to side with him just for the parties. Then when it came to the fight, I’d go over to Cap (laughs). Tony and I could party together, but as soon as it comes to fighting, I’d go with Cap.”

Falcon siding with Cap in Civil War isn’t very surprising, especially when you consider that he took a similar stance in the comic book storyline from which the film draws its name and premise. Falcon supports Steve Rogers against the Superhero Registration Act, and temporarily assumes leadership of the Secret Avengers team when Cap is incapacitated. What parts of that storyline will be adapted for the big screen remain to be seen, but at least now we have a small piece of the larger puzzle.

Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Captain America: Civil War will blow into theaters on May 6th, 2016.
