The 26th Annual Producers Guild of America Awards have just concluded, ending with a gigantic surprise. Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s brilliant Birdman has taken down the juggernaut Boyhood to claim the PGA’s top award as Best Picture of the Year, meaning we now have a new leader for the Best Picture Oscar (I may have previously spoken too soon when I said that Birdman‘s lack of a Film Editing nomination would hold it back). As previously mentioned, the PGA and the Academy have agreed on Best Picture 18 out of 25 times, including the last seven years in a row.
It’s worth noting that we saw the exact same situation occur four years ago, when The King’s Speech managed to defeat the seemingly-unbeatable The Social Network (which dominated throughout the critics awards). Birdman already has a great chance of taking home Best Actor and Best Cast tomorrow night at the SAG awards (ironically the exact same awards The King’s Speech received), but does this mean the Directors Guild will also swing its way as they did when Tom Hooper suddenly beat David Fincher? It’ll certainly make their awards much more interesting to watch now that we’ve had this wonderful shakeup this evening.
Tomorrow night, be sure to join us for live updates for the Screen Actors Guild Awards, where we’ll see if Birdman can continue garnering praise from those in the industry.
