Sony has announced that they have reached a deal with streaming music service Spotify in order to create a new music destination called PlayStation Music. The service will be available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xperia smartphones and tablets when it launches later this year.
Featuring support for both free and premium versions of Spotify, PlayStation Music will allow gamers to stream their favorite tunes on their platform of choice. PlayStation 4 owners will even have the option to stream music while they are playing games. So now you can blaze through the courses of Driveclub or pull off a Destiny raid with the background music of your choosing.
With Sony now partnering up with Spotify, this means that the company’s previous music service, Music Unlimited, will close prior to the launch of PlayStation Music. Beginning on February 28th, anyone with an active Music Unlimited subscription will be given free access to the service through March 29, which is when it is tentatively scheduled to shut down.
As someone who owns both a PlayStation 4 and a Spotify Premium Account, I’m pretty excited about this partnership. I already tend to play music through my laptop while I’m gaming, but playing it through my HD television sounds just a tad bit better. I’m also excited to see what other exclusive features Sony has planned for the service, as they’ll revealed over the next few months.
