Just when you think there has been one mockumentary too many, along comes What We Do in the Shadows. Written, directed by and starring Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, the film follows a group of four vampires who share an apartment together in Wellington, New Zealand.
There’s the sweet-faced Viago (Waititi), who tries to keep things in order, the Transylvanian Lothario Vladislav (Clement), who is not the least bit blind to how sexy he is, the bad boy Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and last but not least, Petyr (Ben Fransham), who is an 8,000 year old vampire that looks like he came out of the movie Nosferatu.
A documentary crew films the vampires as they roam the streets of Wellington in search of people to suck the blood out of (preferably virgins), but things soon get out of hand when a potential victim named Nick (Cori Gonzalez-Macuer) escapes and, instead of getting killed, gets turned into a vampire by Petyr.
It was a lot of fun speaking with Waititi and Clement while they were in Los Angeles to do press for What We Do in the Shadows last week. During our exclusive interview, they spoke about the kinds of vampire movies they were looking to satirize, the challenge of improvising, and of how this project evolved from the 2005 short film it was loosely based on.
