Since the release of mid-life crisis drama This Is 40, acclaimed director Judd Apatow has switched gears to focus on producing, dabbling in a variety of projects including Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues and Begin Again, not to mention HBO’s award-winning series, Girls. Now, the filmmaker will step back behind the camera once more for his upcoming all-new comedy Trainwreck, which today revealed its first trailer.
Starring stand-up comedian Amy Schumer – who also helped with script duties – opposite Superbad and Forgetting Sarah Marshall star Bill Hader, the film will orbit around Schumer’s protagonist as a woman who struggles to sustain a relationship with a significant other beyond the clichéd one night stand. But when she is given the opportunity to produce a feature piece on a sports doctor (Hader), she soon finds that her once-concrete attitude about men is beginning to chip away and that monogamy, despite what she has been told, may indeed be realistic after all.
Aside from the trailer above, there hasn’t been much released for Trainwreck at this point in time. All we know for sure is that Apatow’s latest will make an appearance at the upcoming SXSW festival. Granted, it may not reinvent the romantic comedy genre, but there is enough talent behind the camera to warrant a sense of cautious optimism.
Speaking of which, the film also boasts one hell of an ensemble cast, with the likes of LeBron James, Brie Larson, Colin Quinn, Vanessa Bayer, Ezra Miller, John Cena, Barkhad Abdi, Mike Birbiglia, Jon Glaser, Daniel Radcliffe, Marisa Tomei and Amar’e Stoudemire all on board to appear in some shape or form, be it a cameo or fully-featured role.
Trainwreck will arrive in theaters on July 17.
