Ever since its awe-inspiring debut, almost every conversation surrounding The Order: 1886 at one point or another references the PlayStation 4 exclusive’s stunning graphical prowess. But with its anticipated release now a mere two weeks away, Ready at Dawn has been shifting the attention to the gameplay, and in a recent interview with Gametrailers, the studio placed a heavy emphasis on the title’s unique approach to cutscenes.

Ru Weerasuriya, creative director of the Victorian era shooter, acknowledged some of the apprehension that has loomed large over The Order much like the thick smog that clouds its London setting, but hinted that the way in which the game delivers cinematics is unlike anything the studio has ever done.

“We took the risk of trying to do something that was different, but the reality of it is that it is part of the game, and one of the big things we want to tackle with this game,” he said. “That kind of seamless-ness, that constant question that you have of whether or not what you’re looking at is a cinematic or are you playing the game.”

“We put it out there and see what people say, but for us it was important that as the next-generation was here to do something different not to just give people what they expected; not to just say, ‘Hey, here’s every game you’ve seen until now and we’re just giving you a re-hash. We wanted something new.”

Originally revealed in tandem with the PlayStation 4 all the way back in February of 2013, The Order: 1886 has been billed as one of the system’s flagship titles, and as the market cries out for a true triple-A experience to really put the console through its paces, Ready at Dawn’s cover-based, narrative-driven experience is arriving at an opportune time. Time will tell whether it can do go on its promise.

The Order: 1886 lands exclusively on PlayStation 4 on February 20.
