We knew it was coming, but the writers still didn’t waste anytime getting there. Tonight’s episode of The Vampire Diaries included the loss of not one, but two, recurring characters. Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) succumbed to a very natural death, and Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) ventured to parts unknown. And without any sugarcoating or exaggeration needed, “Stay” was just, well, really sad.
Knowing it was coming didn’t exactly make the ordeal any easier for fans who were treated to a truly heartbreaking final scene with Mystic Falls’ beloved Sheriff. Caroline (Candice Accola), who is arguably the character that has stayed the most consistent throughout the series, experienced a grave sense of loss (which I suspect will be magnified in the next episode) now having said goodbye to both parents, rendering her much like everyone else – an orphan. She handled it much like she handles everything else that is thrown at her though, with an elegance that only she could pull off. My only question was, why didn’t anyone call Klaus (Joseph Morgan)?
Not to be a complete killjoy, because I did genuinely enjoy watching Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline finally have their long awaited kiss, complete with dramatic back-lighting, but it does seem like the type of emergency situation that would warrant a guest appearance from one Original Vampire. I’m fully aware that the Klaroline train has sailed, at least for the immediate future, yet something about her going through this substantial loss without him at least having the opportunity to pay his respects seems like an oversight on the part of The Vampire Diaries‘ writers, who certainly didn’t forget to give Tyler (Michael revino) – noticeably absent from tonight’s episode after his disastrous break up with Liv (Penelope Mitchell) – a heads up.
