Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot has already cast its leading four ladies: Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon were confirmed late last month. However, what would a bona fide spook-huntin’ comedy be without a raft of kooky supporting characters? It’s impossible to imagine the original film and its sequel without the presence of droll secretary Janine Melnitz or the bumbling Louis Tully, and now, it seems we’ve further details on the supporting role that Saturday Night Live star Cecily Strong may be playing.
In a story from Film Divider, the outlet offers up details about an apparently key fifth role in the movie. Not a Ghostbuster per say, she’s described as one of the weightier roles outside of the core quartet:
“The role is one of the biggest non-Ghostbuster parts aside from the villain. She’s an authority figure who liaises with our heroines, privately backing their activities and acknowledging their legitimacy, but publicly denouncing the group to the media in order to avoid panic amongst the wider populous.”
This new rumor certainly lines up with Feig’s discussions with Sony head Amy Pascal, which were made public during the Sony hack. Amidst their e-mails, he outlined that he was interested in Strong for the part of “a bureaucrat who is always saying terrible things about them in press conferences and then apologizing to them behind the scenes.” The two descriptions sound identical, leading us to believe it may carry a shred of truth. The role is thought to have been created specifically for Strong, and will most likely play up to her comedic strengths showcased on SNL.
With or without Strong, Ghostbusters will arrive in theaters on July 22nd 2016.
