Rooney Mara Says The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Sequel Is Unlikely

Stieg Larsson's Millennium trilogy of books introduced the world to hacker whiz Lisbeth Salander, who rose to prominence in the original adapted movie series. Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy of books introduced the world to hacker whiz Lisbeth Salander, who rose to prominence in the original adapted movie series. In that first trio of pics, Noomi Rapace played Salander, and was eager to pass on the torch to another actress for the U.S. remakes. Enter Rooney Mara, who confidently picked up the mantle for David Fincher’s 2011 remake – The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Sadly, that first stab at rebooting the material for American audiences flopped. Mostly a critical and financial failure, it seemed all hope was lost for igniting a sequel. Until, strangely enough, the project began to gather traction in 2013. Seven scribe Andrew Kevin Walker was enlisted to draft a script for the follow-upThe Girl Who Played With Fire – and late last year, Fincher himself suggested the franchise still had life.

While his comments pointed to an entirely new direction for the second movie, Mara addressed the topic even more recently – and it’s not looking good. Talking to E! Online, Mara – a.k.a. the titular girl – spoke out with a weary heart on the subject of more movies:

I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m sad never to do it again, but it just doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards.

Understandably, the fact that her first performance as the techno genius is now four years old hints that Sony may have lost interest in the sequel. That’s not to say there won’t be another Dragon Tattoo caper, but, with Daniel Craig reportedly out of the mix and Fincher’s involvement sketchy at best, is it any wonder that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo franchise could be kaput?
