Despite pleas from fans of the franchise, the Legacy of Kain series has essentially laid dormant since 2003. This doesn’t mean that studios haven’t tried to revive it, though. In fact, NeoGAF user Mama Robotnik recently leaked 30 minutes of footage from the previously cancelled Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun earlier today.

Unlike previous entries in the series, which told the intertwining tale of Kain and Raziel, Dead Sun represented a new chapter in world of Nosgoth. Taking place years after the events of Legacy of Kain: Defiance, the title would focus on Asher, a human whose soul has taken control of the vampire, Gein, who killed him. The leaked footage, which can be seen here, focuses on the early portions of the campaign.

With long-time series developer Crystal Dynamics focused on the Tomb Raider franchise, Climax Studios (Silent Hill: Shattered Memories) was handling development duties on Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun. Despite three years of development being put into the title, Square Enix elected to cancel it in 2012 due to low sales projections.

Additional information on the title, including screenshots, insider information from people who worked on it, and the history behind the storyline of the game can be found in the original post.

As a pretty big fan of the franchise, it pains me to see this footage. I mean, I’m glad to know that something was in the works, but it’s unfortunate that Square Enix decided to cancel the game. Despite their projections, though, I feel that this could have sold reasonably well, especially if it had managed to make the PlayStation 4 launch. Of course, Square Enix was also disappointed in the sales of Tomb Raider, which sold over 3.4 million copies in four months, so who knows exactly what they want.

For those who have read up on the game, what are you thoughts on Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun? Would you have been interested in returning to the world of Nosgoth? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
