Activision May Reveal A “More Realistic” Guitar Hero At E3 In June

Activision is gearing up to unveil a new version of Guitar Hero at this year’s E3 event, if a source close to Kotaku is to be believed.

In what would be the first entry into the series for over four years, the report suggests that the publisher is gunning for a “more realistic” incarnation of the music title, replete with life-like rockers and crowds upon which to surf. As you would expect, this revival would see the return of the franchise’s guitar peripherals, and the anonymous tipster stated that Activision will bring the modernized Guitar Hero to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at some point this year following a full reveal in June.

Mind you, the company remained coy on revealing anything ahead of schedule when Kotaku reached out for further comment.

“We don’t comment on rumour or speculation, but have previously said, that as one of the most beloved entertainment franchises, we would only bring Guitar Hero back if we developed the right innovations to usher the franchise into the new generation of gaming,” an Activision spokesperson said when contacted by Kotaku.

Interestingly, this tidbit comes a few weeks after speculation first began swirling relating to a possible Rock Band revival, as evidence began to mount that Harmonix would breathe new life into its dormant franchise with a PS4 and Xbox One reboot. So, is it likely that the genre will witness somewhat of a renaissance during this year’s E3? All signs are pointing to yes.

Granted, though Guitar Hero and Rock Band both ruled the roost a few years ago and their popularity can’t be overstated, both series vanished from the scene as the industry grew tired of plastic peripherals and nine kinds of spinoffs.
