Upcoming real-life drama Suffragette has now landed a North American distribution deal with Focus Features. Directed by Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane) from a screenplay by Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady) and produced by Oscar-nominated producer Alison Owen (Elizabeth) and Faye Ward, Suffragette is described as a moving drama set during the early 20th century. In an era when women were denied the right to vote, many chose to fight for their right to democracy by forming a brigade of activists.

Considering the suffragette movement is such an unequivocally important landmark in history, it’s surprising that it’s taken such a long time for a related film to hit our screens. Nevertheless, with the completed film in the can and a deal to ensure it will reach multiplexes nationwide, it won’t be too long until Suffragette spreads its all-important message.
