The next two chapters in Marvel Studios’ ever-expanding cinematic universe (Avengers: Age of Ultron and Ant-Man) haven’t even hit theaters yet, but the spotlight has already turned to the next big team-up film, Captain America: Civil War. The movie will largely deal with the fallout from Age of Ultron and pit Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against one another, and it’s about to go into production.
According to Collider, the film is set to go in front of cameras on April 1st, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia, and casting notices for extras “with many ethnicities” have already gone out. Accompanying those notices is a new synopsis for the film, which confirms that it will hew closely to Mark Millar’s Civil War comic book arc and deal with some form of the Superhero Registration Act:
Following the events of Age of Ultron, the collective governments of the world pass an act designed to regulate all superhuman activity. This polarizes opinion amongst the Avengers, causing two factions to side with Iron Man or Captain America, which causes an epic battle between former allies.
Anthony and Joe Russo will likely put their own spin on the seminal Marvel story, just as they did with the Winter Soldier arc last year. Of course, we won’t know how much leeway they’ll have until Age of Ultron hits theaters. In any case, we do know that this will be an Avengers film in and of itself, as evidenced by its extensive cast that includes Chris Evans as Cap, Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Frank Grillo as Crossbones, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, Anthony Mackie as Falcon, Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, Daniel Bruhl as Baron Zemo, and maybe even the new Spider-Man.
Captain America: Civil War is scheduled to blast into theaters on May 6th, 2016.
