It’s a good time to be directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are still feeling the aftershocks of helming two of 2014’s biggest films: The LEGO Movie and 22 Jump Street. The duo are in high demand at the moment, and are now reportedly the object of a game of tug-of-war between Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures.
Latino Review was first to break news that Lord and Miller are “circling” The Flash, which stars Ezra Miller and is currently slated to hit theaters in 2018. That report was then followed up by TheWrap’s Jeff Sneider, who discussed the possibility on his Meet the Movie Press podcast and also mentioned that Sony were eying the pair to helm one of the upcoming Ghostbusters installments.
Lord and Miller were first rumored for that latter gig back in March, and it sounds as if Sony execs are still very interested in keeping them around and bringing some of their Jump Street magic to the ghost-busting franchise, which will soon become a shared cinematic universe of its own, beginning with a Paul Feig-helmed all-female entry next summer.
Initially, it was reported that Anthony and Joe Russo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) would helm the next Ghostbusters film (starring an all-male cast), but with that particular duo now signed on to direct Avengers: Infinity War Part 1 and Part 2 for Marvel, that may no longer be the case, leaving the door wide open for Lord and Miller to step in.
Which project Lord and Miller choose to take on (if any) remains a mystery, especially since they have a strong and successful working relationship with both studios. Personally, I’d love to see them take on The Flash and inject the DC Cinematic Universe with their trademark fun and humorous style. But, there’s no denying that they’d do some great things with Ghostbusters as well.
