Out of the starry line-up of blockbusters scrambling for the title of ‘best summer movie’ there’s a strong chance that Paul Feig’s espionage comedy Spy probably won’t try to compete. But with audiences currently undergoing a marketing blitz over multi-million dollar franchises like Furious 7, Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Mad Max: Fury Road, is there space for a smaller, less-bombastic chucklefest? If this new clip from Spy is truly indicative of the film as a whole, we’d have to say: absolutely, hands down.
Starring Feig regular Melissa McCarthy as CIA desk lackey Susan Cooper, the film follows her journey from competent-yet-underused dogsbody to a fledgling secret agent after her partner (Jude Law) goes missing. Part of her adventures involve a rendezvous with Rose Byrne’s arms dealer Rayna Boyanov, who can be spotted in this clip (via the link below) chatting to McCarthy’s agent.
The video, located above, runs for a solid minute before reaching the actual scene, but it’s worth waiting for to hear the witty repartee of the two actors. Byrne’s comic timing is as sharp as ever and McCarthy appears to have calmed down the Tammy histrionics. If there was any doubt that McCarthy had lost her touch, then this ought to completely decimate it.
If you like what you see, there’s not too much longer to wait to see McCarthy fly into action, as Spy opens on June 5 and co-stars Jason Statham, Jude Law, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Peter Serafinowicz, Miranda Hart, Allison Janney and Morena Baccarin.
Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency’s most dangerous missions. But when her partner (Jude Law) falls off the grid and another top agent (Jason Statham) is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global disaster.
