Late last week, news broke that Academy Award winning screenwriter and producer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, American Crime) was developing a secret television project for Marvel Studios. Now, a rumor has surfaced suggesting that it could in fact focus on Kamala Khan, the Muslim-American, teenage superhero known as Ms. Marvel.
It’s worth noting that this should be taken with a Hulkbuster-sized grain of salt, as it originated on Reddit and may very well be either fake or purposefully misleading. Still, it’s an intriguing idea nonetheless, and one that would fit Ridley’s resume well.
According to the original post (which has since been taken down), ABC is likely to cancel American Crime and since they still have Ridley on contract, they want to continue working with him. He has reportedly been offered the Cloak and Dagger adaptation that has long been in the works, but he’s instead opted to bring Kamala Khan to the MCU.
The one issue with bringing a character like Khan into the MCU is that her idol, Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), has yet to appear, and likely won’t until her solo film in 2018. Khan is an Inhuman with a fascination with Danvers, which is why she takes up the name Ms. Marvel when she begins her own crime-fighting career. So, is it feasible to introduce Khan’s Ms. Marvel before bringing Danvers’ Captain Marvel to the MCU?
