One thing that was immediately clear when that show-stopping first trailer for Mad Max: Fury Road landed online was that George Miller’s upcoming reboot-cum-sequel wouldn’t shy away from bombastic set pieces. In fact, we’d even go so far to say that the Tom Hardy-fronted actioner embraces them whole-heartedly, and as any genre fan will tell you, a key component of many an action scene is the vehicle.

However, given that Miller’s post-apocalyptic vision is situated in a world where survival is paramount, the vehicles here aren’t your typically sleek sports car; rather, the automobiles look like a cross between your standard fare car and a weapon of mass destruction. And thankfully, with Fury Road‘s release date inching ever closer, the folks over at Car and Driver have debuted a series of stills that showcase the idiosyncratic vehicles that will headline this summer’s most outrageous blockbuster, and you can check out the hulking wares using the gallery above.

For the uninitiated, Mad Max: Fury Road will see Tom Hardy waltz onto the scene as the titular Road Warrior, only to find himself between the proverbial crosshairs of the tyrannical Immorten Joe, a deluded, self-appointed ruler with a taste for blood. As his only hope of survival, Max soon turns to Charlize Theron’s Furiosa, as the unlikely pair do their utmost to escape the oncoming, deranged pursuers.

Tom Hardy will step foot onto the sun-kissed Wasteland when Mad Max: Fury Road screeches into theaters on May 15.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.
