When you pause to consider that X-Men: Apocalypse is arriving off the back of the time-hopping, genre-bending Days of Future Past, one thing that becomes immediately clear is that, if Bryan Singer really is to top last year’s success story – DoFP stands as the highest-grossing entry into the franchise – then Apocalypse is truly set up to be a colossal undertaking.

However, a rumor doing the rounds earlier this morning hinted that next year’s installment in the superhero franchise may act as Singer’s last hooray in the X-Men universe, with both Apocalypse and James Mangold’s The Wolverine sequel shutting the book on a legacy that the acclaimed director started all the way back in 2000.

First picked up by Internet sleuth Umberto Gonzalez, the following tidbit ought to be strictly filed in the rumor cabinet, with no word yet from either Singer himself or Fox.

What lends this rumor some weight is the fact that Hugh Jackman has been vocal about wanting to hang up the adamantium claws as Wolverine after one final bow as Logan. Mind you, Fox will likely fight tooth and nail to sure the X-Men franchise continues in some shape or form, with or without Singer at the helm.

Bryan Singer’s upcoming – and possibly final foray – in Fox’s superhero universe, X-Men: Apocalypse, has been slated for May 27, 2016. To get an early glimpse of some of the leading cast members, check out the pair of set photos the director shared earlier today.
