Joss Whedon Explains Loki’s Absence In Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Those walking into Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend expecting to see Loki appear on screen will be sorely disappointed. While we all know that James Spader's titular robot is the film's main baddie, some people were still expecting to see Tom Hiddleston's fan favorite character show up in a minor role. Especially since we had heard that the actor shot a few scenes for the movie back in the Fall.

Those walking into Avengers: Age of Ultron this weekend expecting to see Loki appear on screen will be sorely disappointed. While we all know that James Spader’s titular robot is the film’s main baddie, some people were still expecting to see Tom Hiddleston’s fan favorite character show up in a minor role. Especially since we had heard that the actor shot a few scenes for the movie back in the Fall.

However, apparently Hiddleston’s material was left on the cutting room floor and in a recent interview with MTV News, director Joss Whedon explains why he made that decision:

“We did shoot something, but it didn’t play,” he told MTV News.“The movie has so much. It’s so filled. We didn’t want it to feel overstuffed. I really wanted to have Loki in it, but I understood the decision that there were now too many voices in the chorus. At some point the embarrassment of riches is actually embarrassing,” he added.

For those who have seen Avengers: Age of Ultron, this makes perfect sense. There really is a hell of a lot going on in the film and to try and stuff more characters into what is already a jam-packed plot probably wouldn’t have been the best idea. We’ve seen a lot of movies go down that road before and often, it doesn’t end well. Whedon may have pulled it off in the original Avengers, but there’s a lot more happening this time around and unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough room for Loki.

Avengers: Age of Ultron is now playing in theatres everywhere. For those who have seen it, tell us, was Ultron a formidable villain, or would you have preferred to see Loki face off against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes again? Sound off below!
