Though neither The Da Vinci Code nor Angels and Demons wowed critics, Universal execs were certainly thrilled with both films’ box office performance (the former was 2006’s second highest-grossing film, while the latter was 2009’s ninth), and so threequel Inferno is moving full steam ahead. Cameras are currently rolling on the film, with shooting having recently concluded in Venice, Italy, and director Ron Howard (who also directed the two previous installments) has been tweeting some snaps from the production.
Tom Hanks reprises the role of Professor Robert Langdon, who awakens in an Italian hospital with no memory of how he got there. Partnering with the brilliant and beautiful Dr. Sienna Brooks (Felicity Jones, hot off an Academy Award nomination for her powerhouse performance in The Theory of Everything), Langdon attempts to recover his lost memories and in the process ends up hunting a madman with plans to release a deadly plague on the world that’s connected to Dante’s Inferno.
Inferno is actually adapted from the fourth of Dan Brown’s bestselling Robert Langdon novels, after The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and The Lost Symbol. Though Universal does have plans to adapt The Lost Symbol into a film, execs ultimately decided to go with Inferno first, perhaps to capitalize on the book’s more recent popularity. David Koepp penned the script, as he did previously for Angels and Demons.
In addition to Hanks and Jones, the film boasts a talented supporting cast, including Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy and Sidse Babett Knudsen. Everyone involved in the production has earned critical acclaim in recent years, and though the last two entries didn’t exactly set top-ten lists ablaze, maybe Inferno will be the Robert Langdon adventure that finally connects with audiences and reviewers alike.
