With ABC’s Revenge wrapping up its fourth and final season, Emily VanCamp is set to return as Agent 13/Kate/Sharon Carter in Captain America: Civil War.

The actress played the same character in a small but key role in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. She was introduced in that film as a neighbor of the newly unfrozen Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), a nurse by the name of Kate. It was soon revealed, though, that she was actually a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent tasked with protecting him. When it was revealed that HYDRA had infiltrated the security organization, she retained her loyalty to the Cap and fought against turncoat S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, surviving the Battle of the Triskelion and ultimately enlisting in the CIA.

In the comics, Agent 13 was the alias of Sharon Carter, a S.H.I.E.L.D. operative and ally of Captain America who is also the niece of Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), Cap’s WWII-era love interest. Though it has not been directly stated in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Agent 13 is related to Carter, that’s the general assumption held by fans.

As such, it makes a lot of sense that VanCamp would be included in the burgeoning cast of Captain America: Civil War.

SPOILERS TO FOLLOW…

In the ‘Civil War’ comics, Carter was actually hypnotized by villain Doctor Faustus into gunning down Rogers on the steps of the Federal Court at the conclusion of the Civil War, marking a monumental occasion in the Marvel universe. Given that Faustus has not been introduced in the film franchise (and that the Cap is still a central figure in the MCU after the events of Age of Ultron), it’s unlikely a similar storyline will be enacted, but there’s always a chance, no matter how slim, that the film could surprise us.

END SPOILERS

Captain America: Civil War opens on May 6, 2016 and is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Marvel’s new BFFs who previously helmed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and are also set for Avengers: Infinity War.
