The Last Guardian Probably Would Have Bitten The Bullet If Fan Demand Wasn’t So High

Until this year's E3 fired up its engines and kicked off in full splendor, many considered Sony's The Last Guardian to be nothing more than vaporware; a piece of software that was never anything more than a tech demo to show off the power of the PlayStation 3.

Until this year’s E3 fired up its engines and kicked off in full splendor, many considered Sony’s The Last Guardian to be nothing more than vaporware; a piece of software that was never anything more than a tech demo to show off the power of the PlayStation 3.

Fast forward several years to the present day, and the world finally has confirmation that Team ICO’s game is, in fact, very real, and it’s releasing at some point in 2016.

It’s only now though, that we’ve managed to get a picture of just how close the game came to being cancelled. In an interview with the most recent issue of EDGE magazine, Sony president Shuhei Yoshida shed some light on the project and its troubled years stuck in development hell.

Tech issues aside, the game was still early in development, so we had to have a really strong desire to continue the project and rebuild on PS4. And of course we believed in the vision of Ueda-san, and Ueda-san and the core teams really wanted to see this realised, and so did I. Having so many people asking us about the game was great encouragement for us to continue the development.

When pressed further on if Sony would have ever cancelled the highly-anticipated title, Yoshida stated that “If everyone stopped asking about it, probably we would have.” Ultimately then, fans of The Last Guardian potentially only have themselves to thank that the game even still exists.

Give yourselves a pat on the back, guys!
