The evil of Bughuul is spreading in the chilling red-band trailer for Sinister 2. A sequel to the 2012 frightener that finds Citadel‘s Ciarán Foy taking the reins from Scott Derrickson, the film focuses on a new family that finds itself under siege by the same supernatural entity that the Oswalt clan previously fared so poorly against.

This time around, Deputy So and So (James Ransone, seemingly the human face of the franchise), having failed to prevent the brutal murders of true-crime writer Ellison Oswalt (Ethan Hawke) and his family, sets out on the trail of Bughuul, hoping to stop the demon before it claims another set of victims. Judging from all the blood and guts on display in the red-band trailer, though, he doesn’t seem to be doing a great job on that front.

Shannyn Sossamon and Robert and Dartanian Sloan play Bughuul’s latest targets, with Lea Coco also taking on a role.

The sequel, again written by Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill, looks set to expand the mythology behind Bughuul, which will either add a terrifying new wrinkle to the series or remove the mystique of the horrifying entity entirely, but your guess is as good as mine as to what end result further explaining Bughuul will have. As a fan of the original, I’m cautiously optimistic about the follow-up, especially because the scribes appear to have come up with some creepy and creative kills, but horror sequels are always a tricky proposition. Fingers crossed.

Sinister 2 opens August 21.

The sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit horror movie. In the aftermath of the shocking events in “Sinister,” a protective mother (Shannyn Sossamon of “Wayward Pines”) and her 9-year-old twin sons (real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan) find themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity.
