DVBBS And Mike Hawkins’ Telephone Sounds Like A Parody, But It’s Not

I guess I shouldn't be that surprised that a DVBBS track has so many stereotypical big room house elements all awkwardly mashed together, but this time it really seemed like they couldn't be serious. The duo teamed up with Danish DJ/producer Mike Hawkins on "Telephone," a track built around the off-hook recording played on landline telephones in North America, and I'm really struggling to write something about it without falling back on the obvious "phoning it in" joke.

The duo teamed up with Danish DJ/producer Mike Hawkins on “Telephone,” a song built around the off-hook recording played on landline telephones in North America, and I’m really struggling to write something about it without falling back on the obvious “phoning it in” joke.

…But yeah, they totally phoned it in on “Telephone.” A trite festival house rhythm leads into the sample, which then erupts into an over-the-top synth lead so comically Scandinavian (undoubtedly due to Hawkins’ influence) that it sounds like the three artists set out to become the Spinal Tap of EDM. The drop isn’t awful, but it’s nothing that hasn’t been done, either – and really, it’s the only part of the arrangement that proves the track wasn’t intended to be a musical caricature.

Who knows, though, “Telephone” could turn out to be your favorite track of the summer, if you’re into that sort of thing. Give DVBBS and Mike Hawkins’ “Telephone” a listen and let us know what you think of the track by sounding off in the comments.
