GRiZ’ Summer ’97 Takes Us Back

We've got new music from GRiZ - well, sort of. We were especially excited to see the self-proclaimed "crunkstep" DJ/producer put out something new after he put out such an amazing new album, but it looks as though "Summer '97" may be a bit more of a throwback, at least as far as GRiZ himself is concerned.

“Felt like spreading the love and dropping a summer vibes tune for everyone today,” he wrote in the SoundCloud description of the track. “This was a song that i started last summer but by the time i finished it it was almost winter and the timing was a bit weird so I continued to refine it and waited.”

And in fact, the energy of the track is considerably softer than his recent work. Largely a re-imagining of the 1971 Seals & Crofts rock and roll hit “Summer Breeze,” this “boom bap soul” number features instrumentals by Detroit-based guitarist Muzzy Bearr among a slew of other samples working in conjunction to give it a laid-back summer vibe. The track makes for a prime example of rich Denver bass in the same creative vein as artists like Pretty Lights or Big Gigantic, and certainly serves to reinforce GRiZ’ own discography.
