Frustrated by leaked copies flooding the Internet, Warner Bros. has chosen to officially release the trailer for Suicide Squad, the hotly anticipated DC Comics pic that will bring together the worst of the worst from Arkham Asylum, from Will Smith’s lethal Deadshot to Jared Leto’s deranged Joker.
Sue Kroll, the studio’s president of Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, had previously said that the footage was intended for Comic-Con audiences alone and would not be released widely. That evidently changed once she saw the leaked footage setting the web on fire and decided she couldn’t stand by while the film was represented via shoddy footage:
“Warner Bros. Pictures and our anti-piracy team have worked tirelessly over the last 48 hours to contain the Suicide Squad footage that was pirated from Hall H on Saturday. We have been unable to achieve that goal. Today we will release the same footage that has been illegally circulating on the web, in the form it was created and high quality with which it was intended to be enjoyed. We regret this decision as it was our intention to keep the footage as a unique experience for the Comic Con crowd, but we cannot continue to allow the film to be represented by the poor quality of the pirated footage stolen from our presentation.”
One has to wonder what studios are expecting when they screen titles as rabidly anticipated as Suicide Squad in front of thousands of eager attendees. Of course people are going to record what they see and let it spread like wildfire. As much as the comic-book fan community loves the superhero genre, loyalty can only stretch so far.
Nevertheless, the trailer is up and posted above for your viewing pleasure. It’s one hell of a teaser, with terrific screen time for Margot Robbie’s acrobatic Harley Quinn and Leto’s Joker. It makes you agonize over waiting for Suicide Squad‘s release next year all the more.
