NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. Interactive’s long-awaited Mortal Kombat X is officially the best-selling game of 2015 thus far in North America, according to a report published by NPD.

As with all NPD statistics, these figures only account for retail sales of software, with digital sales not factoring into the equation. Still, having only launched in April, landing in the coveted number 1 spot is a major coup for NetherRealm’s brawler, and one that irrefutably proves there is still life in the 20-year old franchise yet.

Accounting for sales between January and June, 2015, the retail analyst published the comprehensive top ten, which you can check out below.

1) Mortal Kombat X (Warner Bros.)
2) Grand Theft Auto V (Take-Two)
3) Battlefield Hardline (Electronic Arts)
4) Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (Activision)
5) Minecraft (Microsoft)
6) Batman: Arkham Knight (Warner Bros.)
7) Dying Light (Warner Bros.)
8) NBA 2K15 (Take-Two)
9) The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (CD Projekt Red)
10) Super Smash Bros. (Nintendo)

Shortly after the announcement that Mortal Kombat X had come out on top, series godfather and director Ed Boon took to Twitter to thank the franchise’s fanbase for the continuing support, who hinted recently that there may be more DLC characters making their way into the brutal fighter following Tanya, Jason, Tremor and Predator.

Elsewhere, despite only releasing at the tail-end of June, Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham Knight landed in at 6th, while The Witcher III: Wild Hunt placed a little further down at 9th. As expected, there were a few heavy-hitters from 2014 rounding out the top ten, including the ever-popular Grand Theft Auto V, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare and Super Smash Bros..

What do you make of Mortal Kombat X‘s achievement? Indeed are you surprised to see it sit atop NPD’s retail figures for the United States? Let us know your take below.
