The upcoming Vacation sequel/reboot will be an interesting watch for Marvel fans – the writer-director duo behind the studio comedy, John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, were at one point in the mix to direct the upcoming Spider-Man reboot, and they’ve since been tapped to pen the script. Now, in a joint NPR interview, Daley and Goldstein have confirmed their involvement in the high-profile project and spoken a little about why they’re well-suited for the gig.

The pair have been dancing around news of their involvement in the pic for the past few weeks and seemed elated to finally discuss it:

Daley: We can finally acknowledge that.

Goldstein: We’ve been saying no comment for the last week.

Daley: This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.

Goldstein: We’re thrilled.

Daley: … He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.

A key part of Spider-Man is nailing his wit, and though Daley and Goldstein will have to clean up their act a little bit coming off the R-rated, mostly crude humor-based Vacation reboot, bringing comedy writers on board for the project is an interesting and possibly on-the-money move from the studios.

Sony and Marvel are tackling the currently untitled Spider-Man reboot in tandem so as to accommodate rights on both sides and still bring the web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Jon Watts (Cop Car) is directing, with The Impossible breakout Tom Holland taking on the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Marisa Tomei reported to be stepping into the role of Aunt May. The flick is scheduled to open July 28, 2017 – but Holland is expected to first play the iconic superhero in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, which opens May 6, 2016.
