Another day, another instance of the troubled remake of The Crow hitting a serious snag. Production on the troubled project, a remake of the 1994 cult classic, has been “suspended,” according to multiple sources close to the pic, while U.S. backer Relativity struggles to stay alive after filing for bankruptcy.
According to ScreenDaily, which reported the latest delay, a source close to the studio says that Relativity “intends to move forward with producing and releasing The Crow,” but its current financial woes are getting in the way of anything happening too quickly.
The Crow was to be one of the first movies shot at Pinewood Cardiff, but crew vacated the studio this week after spending months in pre-production. Staff are still waiting to hear if or when production is expected to resume.
Relativity’s problems aside, the movie has struggled to keep a lead actor attached. Jack Huston (Boardwalk Empire) recently vacated the part of a murdered rock star brought back to life to avenge his girlfriend’s murder, either over the good ol’ “creative differences” or simple scheduling issues (depending on who you ask). Luke Evans previously boarded then jumped ship on the pic, and no replacement star has been announced.
It’s also unclear whether Andrea Riseborough remains attached to the part of villain Top Dollar, or whether Forest Whitaker has (or indeed, ever did) come aboard. For the time being at least, the director’s chair remains occupied by Corin Hardy, who had planned to direct The Crow as his anticipated sophomore feature after breakout horror pic The Hallow.
Though sources close to Relativity expressed optimism about the project still going ahead at some point in the very near future, the production suspension comes in the midst of a tumultuous period for Relativity and all upcoming projects that were under its roof. For now, there’s still a very faint pulse, but prospects for The Crow certainly aren’t good.
