Star Wars: The Force Awakens IMAX Scene Detailed

It was late last year when J.J. Abrams shared a single photo from the Abu Dhabi set of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, revealing that the Disney production would shoot one scene in IMAX. Since that time, we've been treated to a pair of tantalizing teaser trailers, with fans pouring over each and every frame in order to uncover every last detail, though the studio has remained mum about the specifics of that sole, big-screen segment. Abrams promised that the scene itself would be rather epic, and it seems Making Star Wars has put two and two together about the film's IMAX sequence.

According to the outlet, The Force Awakens‘ IMAX scene takes place on the desert planet of Jakku, where Daisy Ridley’s scavenger Rey calls home. We’ve seen from the sizzle reels released thus far that the sun-scorched rock plays host to some of the more impressive scenes, from the massive downed Star Destroyer in the backdrop to the Millennium Falcon evading a pair of oncoming TIE Fighters. It certainly makes sense, too, given that Abu Dhabi is acting as a stand-in for the alien planet, and that’s where Abrams shared the original photo with the IMAX camera.

We’ll find out for sure in due time, but whatever the case, Jakku is evidently a major part of Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ story. Not only does it seem to be the location where Ridley’s Rey stumbles upon John Boyega’s defected Stormtropper, Finn, but it’s also the planet where the unlikely pair cross paths with Han Solo and Chewbacca, given that we seen the human trio pile into the cockpit during the excellent Comic-Con reel last month.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will open up a galaxy far, far away to a whole new generation when J.J. Abrams’ anticipated sequel lands in theaters on December 18.
