The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies Extended Cut May Be Rated R

Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy is generally seen as inferior to The Lord Of The Rings, so there wasn't much excitement over the announcement that An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation Of Smaug and The Battle Of The Five Armies were going to be re-released in their extended cuts this Fall - but we've found something out about the longer edition of the final instalment that might pique a bit of interest.

Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy is generally seen as inferior to The Lord Of The Rings, so there wasn’t much excitement over the announcement that An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation Of Smaug and The Battle Of The Five Armies were going to be re-released in their extended cuts this Fall – but we’ve found something out about the longer edition of the final instalment that might pique a bit of interest.

According to Ropes Of Silicon, The Battle Of The Five Armies has been slapped with an R rating by the Motion Picture Association of America. Does this mean we’ll get an additional interspecies sex scene between Tauriel and Kili? Not likely – apparently it’s just for “some violence,” and that’s it.

All of Jackson’s Middle Earth movies contain their fair share of PG-13 fantasy violence, with even a few decapitations thrown in for good measure – but it’ll be very interesting to see what extra scenes warranted that more adult rating. The final film does include several main character deaths, so if any of those moments have been extended or altered (Fili the Dwarf is dispatched much more cruelly in the original script, for example), it may well have prompted the R.

The extended edition of The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies will be released in theaters on October 7th.
