It’s about time Grandtheft kicked another original our way. The Toronto-based producer participated in a couple of massive Mad Decent EPs last year, but has delivered little more than a remix in the months since. Now, he’s teamed up with fellow Canadian Sleepy Tom on “Hold On,” a future bass number with a break beat so subtle you hardly notice it.
It seems like being a future bass producer is kind of like being a Buddhist – the real ones don’t call themselves that. The description on Mad Decent’s SoundCloud account dances around the term, instead using words like “R&B” and “808s.” There’s no denying that the glassy synth work and video-gamey buildup-drop scheme fits the future bass bill to a T, though, which makes for a welcome departure from both Grandtheft and Sleepy Tom’s typical styles.
Grandtheft will be putting out his own debut EP sometime in the fall, but in the meantime, check out “Hold On” above.
