Another reboot is on the cards for the masked do-gooder Zorro. THR has the scoop on this latest iteration, which is more accurately an update on a long-gestating project previously set up over at Fox. Lantica Media and Sobini Films now have guardianship of the film, with an eye to principal photography on Zorro Reborn kicking off early 2016 at Pinewood Studios in the Dominican Republic.
According to THR, the outlined proposal for the movie is “a post-apocalyptic take on the myth of Zorro, the pulp hero created in 1919. The traditional stories cast Zorro as a hero of peasants and farmers who fought against corrupt and brutal officials of Spanish-held California. Reborn is set in the near future but keeps the idea of a masked and caped stranger taking on tyrants.”
Antonio Banderas played the iconic character twice previously, in 1998’s swashbuckling action-adventure The Mask Of Zorro and its sequel The Legend of Zorro. Judging by the dystopian setting for Zorro Reborn, the reboot will veer away from its cinematic predecessors and chart its own course.
Lantico CEO Antonio Gennari, who is financing the film, offered some justification for this significant stylistic change: “Every generation has its own Zorro hero and we’re proud to be able to introduce a new Zorro to this generation.” Producer and Sobini CEO Mark Amin (Good Kill and Frida) also threw in his two cents: “This has been a fifteen year journey filled with ups and downs but it has remained my passion project over the years.”
