It was probably never really in doubt, but director James Gun has confirmed that the gravel-voiced actor will return to give life to monosyllabic sentient tree alien Groot in Marvel's Guardians Of The Galaxy sequel.

It was probably never really in doubt, but director James Gunn has confirmed that Vin Diesel will return to give life to monosyllabic sentient tree alien Groot in Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy sequel, which is currently titled Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

To be fair, there was a small chance Groot wouldn’t return for Volume 2 – or at least, not the same Groot from the first film. Towards the end, the noble creature sacrifices himself to save his friends in that tear-jerking (shut up… you know you cried too!) “we are Groot” scene. His pal Rocket saves a sapling though, and just before the credits rolled, we see a bouncing baby Groot dancing to the Jackson 5.

So, although it was always fairly obvious he’d return, there was also the possibility it’d be a younger version, voiced by a different actor… right? Okay, maybe not – but hey, it’s nice to have it confirmed anyway.

You can also expect Star Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Drax (Dave Bautista), Yondu (Michael Rooker), and Nebula (Karen Gillan) to return along with a batch of new characters when Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters on May 5, 2017.
