The first two movies in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy (An Unexpected Journey and The Desolation Of Smaug) have been available in their extended forms for a while now, but the upcoming release of the longer version of the third and final installment – The Battle Of The Five Armies – has come with a bit more fanfare that the others; because it’s been rated R! Why exactly is unclear, but we’d assume it’s for some extra violence in the various battle scenes and not bad language or nudity.
All three extended cuts are getting a theatrical re-release in October, and this trailer for the Fathom Events screening contains a few shots from the additional material in the final film. There’s nothing R-rated in the footage, but we do get to see a bit more of Beorn the Skinchanger laying waste to Orcs – something that many fans were disappointed they didn’t get to see in the original cut.
The Fathom Events screening of the extended cuts of all three The Hobbit movies kicks off on October 5th, and The Hobbit: The Battle Of The Five Armies extended edition arrives on Blu-ray and DVD on November 17th.
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves. Having reclaimed their homeland from the Dragon Smaug, the Company has unwittingly unleashed a deadly force into the world. Enraged, Smaug rains his fiery wrath down upon the defenseless men, women and children of Lake-town.
