The Flash Season 2 Casts Tony Todd As The Voice Of Zoom

The upcoming second season of The CW's The Flash will introduce one of the Scarlet Speedster's best known enemies from the comics, Professor Zoom - but with an interesting twist. Clearly hoping to bide their time with the casting and debut of the character himself, our first exposure to the villain will be vocal, as Candyman actor Tony Todd as been cast as the "voice of Zoom."

The upcoming second season of The CW’s The Flash will introduce one of the Scarlet Speedster’s best known enemies from the comics, Zoom – but with an interesting twist. Clearly hoping to bide their time with the casting and debut of the character himself, our first exposure to the villain will be vocal, as Candyman actor Tony Todd as been cast as the “voice of Zoom.”

The show’s executive producer Andrew Kreisberg explains the decision to Variety:

“Last year, with the Reverse-Flash, we just modulated Tom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different. Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader — this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better than Tony Todd.”

Indeed, Todd has one of the most distinctive voices out there, and is no stranger to DC projects, either, having appeared in Smallville back in the day and also providing character voices for the likes of LEGO DC Comics Superheroes, Young Justice, and Batman: The Brave And The Bold.

A different actor will most likely be cast to portray Zoom in the flesh, and from the sounds of things, whoever that is won’t be sporting just a simple supervillian costume. Kreisberg adds that Zoom’s attire is “much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive… There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.”

Be sure to tune in to the CW on October 6 when The Flash returns for its second season.
