As opposed to focusing intently on the creation of the monster itself, Paul McGuigan’s upcoming Victor Frankenstein is as much of a character drama as it is a supernatural creature feature – if not more so. To prove it, 20th Century Fox has breathed new life into the rickety old marketing machine to produce a pair of brief featurettes for the live-action feature.
Introducing James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe’s leading duo – who are set to play Victor and his protégé Igor Strausman, respectively – the clips spotlight the characters themselves, their personalities and what they mean to one another. As a decidedly different take on Mary Shelley’s indelible literary legend of life, death and the transient line that divides the two, Victor Frankenstein reads like a medieval buddy cop movie – only on this occasion, the case involves resurrecting the recently deceased rather than playing good cop, bad cop.
Last month summoned the film’s maiden trailer, hinting at an array of supernatural threats and experiments gone awry as the eclectic pairing get closer and closer to their true vision. Playing the visionary behind the majority of the dangerous, wholly illegal projects, McAvoy describes Victor as the original mad scientist, while Radcliffe’s Igor is much more than a tertiary, crippled hunchback. It’s for this reason that the dynamic between both leads is arguably the most tantalizing tenet of McGuigan’s adaptation, and we’re excited to see how the brilliant duo defy all laws of nature in a few months’ time.
