The arduous, contradictory Hellboy 3 saga rumbles on today, with Ron Perlman offering another update on Guillermo Del Toro’s long-gestating threequel.

With two thirds of the trilogy already complete, Perlman hopes to one day conclude the fantasy series with a fitting finale, though financing has long been the straw that broke the camel’s back when it comes to Hellboy 3. Putting the logistics aside for the time being, Perlman indulged in Del Toro’s grand, “amazingly theatrical” vision for the trilogy capper.

It’s no secret that Perlman has been championing ideas for the sequel via Twitter, with the actor even going so far as to say that he “owes the world” one final outing as the cigar-chomping half-demon. Here, the actor dove horns first into Del Toro’s vision with Empire.

“I really feel as though I’m done with the character,” admitted Perlman. “I don’t have a burning desire to put that shit on again. But Guillermo told me what the resolve of the trilogy would look like, in broad strokes, and it’s such an amazingly theatrical, cinematic idea, that I found it essential that we do it. We were designed to be a trilogy, with a beginning, a middle and an end. We’ve only done two-thirds, so I feel that we’re not really done until we finish it.”

Now that the beginning and middle are firmly in place, it seems to be a case of ramping up the stakes for the would-be threequel – one which would seemingly involve the beast of the apocalypse.

“Holy shit, he’s the beast of the Apocalypse. He has to take down civilisation. He has to. It’s non-negotiable. That’s the foundation for the story, and that’s why I think it would be a shame if we don’t do it.”

Alas, the coveted studio greenlight has long eluded Hellboy 3. Fans can take solace in the fact that this is the largest amount of traction that the project has seen in years, but unless it comes to a head with a bona fide announcement, we’re best off tapering our expectations.
