Few platformers provided a fresh burst of originality and creativity into the genre in the vein of Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy series. Taking the industry’s favorite plumber into outer space, the titles gained legions of admirers and appropriately starry reviews upon release, and one question that has been on the lips of fans ever since has been in relation to the elusive Super Mario Galaxy 3.
A full five years since the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2, Nintendo’s own Shigeru Miyamoto touched base on the matter of the potential threequel in an interview with Eurogamer, hinting that possibility of pushing ahead with the sought-after title is never off the table.
“[A new Mario Galaxy] is always in discussion,” Miyamoto told Eurogamer. “But even with Mario 64 there was a lot of feedback about motion sickness with the 3D or maybe us making it too difficult.
“We’re always thinking, is there a middle ground where people who do enjoy the 3D worlds of Galaxy and those who enjoy New Super Mario Bros. can both enjoy it? We’re always looking at those opportunities. But as the hardware technology gets better and advances, I think there will be a lot of opportunity for both options.”
As one would expect, it seems that Nintendo is playing its cards close to its chest for the time being. Now that the NX hardware has been announced – but, crucially, not unveiled – the Big N is in somewhat of a console transition at the moment, meaning that it’s now a case of managing its esteemed roster of IPs as it deems fit.
From The Legend of Zelda to the new and bona fide Metroid game, there are ample titles simmering in development that could make the jump to Nintendo’s NX system, with the Wii U now effectively dead in the water in terms of sales.
Before looking to the stars with Super Mario Galaxy 3, though, the Big N will look to the past for its upcoming Super Mario Maker, due to hit Wii U on September 11.
