Deep Silver has announced the impending closure of Dead Island Epidemic‘s servers. Come October 15, they’ll be shut down for good, and a statement was released earlier today explaining the decision.

Ever since starting with the Closed Alpha, and all the way through the Closed Beta and Open Beta, we’ve received a great amount of useful criticism and encouraging feedback from our players. This has been invaluable for all the teams involved in developing the game.

Over the past weeks and months we’ve been evaluating how to proceed with Dead Island Epidemic and looking towards the future for the game. We’re sad to announce today that we’ve come to the conclusion to cease further development.

Although no concrete reason was given for the Dead Island Epidemic’s upcoming closure, this isn’t the first contentious decision that Deep Silver has made for the franchise in recent months. Back in July, the studio announced that it had parted ways with Dead Island 2 developer Yager; the company’s CEO having said to GamesIndustry.biz at the time, that:

Our team is made of the best creative minds and tech specialists, who all share a common identity. The team worked with enthusiasm to take Dead Island 2 to a new level of quality. However, Yager and Deep Silver’s respective visions of the project fell out of alignment, which led to the decision that has been made.

Deep Silver have stated that various discounts on characters and boos items will be made available in the remaining month of life that Dead Island Epidemic has to enable players to spend any in-game currency they have accrued.
