Double, double, toil and trouble: The Weinstein Company has today revealed a new trailer and clip for Justin Kurzel’s starry adaptation of Macbeth, unveiling our first fleeting look at the three witches that will bring about the downfall of Michael Fassbender’s Thane of Glamis.

As the malevolent sorcerers whisper and chant, Macbeth is seemingly destined for greatness, and after planting a mental seed in the aftermath of a gruelling battle in the Scottish Highlands, Fassbender’s man who would be king embarks on a bloodthirsty path to the crown. By his side is the deceitful and intense Lady Macbeth (Marion Cotillard), who will be instrumental in the plot to overthrow King Duncan.

Shakespeare’s famed play is no stranger to screens both big and small, but as these moody new clips attest, Kurzel’s rendition of the tragic tale may very well be the most stylish of the bunch. They channel the haunting cinematography – slow-mo shots, extreme close-ups – that ensured his directorial debut Snowtown lingered in our subconscious long after the credits role. With one of the most celebrated stories in history at his disposal, we’re confident Kurzel can serve up another memorable, visceral experience.

Elizabeth Debicki, Sean Harris, David Thewlis, Jack Reynor, and Paddy Considine will star alongside Cotillard and Fassbender when Macbeth makes its bow on October 2 in the United Kingdom, before arriving in North America on December 4.

Macbeth is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of Shakespeare’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn 11th Century Scotland.
