It has been announced today that HBO Films has teamed up with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for Thirst, a movie described as a multi-layered story set against the backdrop of the global water crisis. The frequent collaborators and real-life best friends are executive producing the film, which will be written by Charles Leavitt (Blood Diamond) and directed by Elliott Lester (Blitz).

You don’t need us to tell you that that’s a lot of great behind the scenes talent here, something which was emphasized in a statement released by Affleck and Damon earlier today:

“Both Elliott and Chuck are creative forces who bring an extraordinary vision to the material and we are very excited to be a part of it.”

Thirst is the latest project in the duo’s newfound relationship with HBO, as they also recently executive produced a Project Greenlight revival. While both actors have yet to star, write, or direct in one of the cable network’s many dramas, it wouldn’t in the least bit surprising to see that happen somewhere down the line – True Detective Season 3, anyone? – and it sounds like the network is very glad to have them, based on comments from HBO Programming president Michael Lombardo:

“We are extremely pleased to continue our collaboration with Matt and Ben. As two of today’s most gifted filmmakers, they are once again using their cinematic talents to bring awareness to this pressing global issue.”

Thirst definitely sounds like an interesting project for the duo, and for the network, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as it all comes together.
