Anthony Mackie Isn’t Ready To Take Over As Captain America After Civil War

For those of you familiar with the Civil War comic book, you'll know that it ends with Captain America surrendering himself to the authorities and later being assassinated by Crossbones (and Sharon Carter, but that's where things get complicated, as everything from mind control to time travel are involved). Before Steve Rogers inevitably returned, Bucky took over the mantle, and fans are now anxious to know whether the same will apply in the MCU.

For those of you familiar with the Civil War comic book, you’ll know that it ends with Captain America surrendering himself to the authorities and later being assassinated by Crossbones (and Sharon Carter, but that’s where things get complicated, as everything from mind control to time travel are involved). Before Steve Rogers inevitably returned, Bucky took over the mantle, and fans are now anxious to know whether the same will apply in the MCU.

Of course, with Captain America: Civil War looking like a fairly loose adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s event story and Chris Evans expected to return for Avengers: Infinity War, Sebastian Stan taking over could be some time away from happening, but there’s also a chance that Marvel skips Bucky altogether and passes the mantle to Anthony Mackie’s Falcon instead.

After all, the character is currently wielding the shield in the Marvel Universe, but Mackie revealed at the Salt Lake Comic-Con this weekend that he’s actually not a fan of the idea:

“I don’t think we need a new Cap. I don’t think Cap needs to change. I think [Sebastian Stan] would be a great Cap, but then we’re left without Bucky. I think I’d be a great Cap, but then we’re left without a Falcon.”

That’s a very good point, and the actor went on to explain why he’s perfectly content with serving as a role model as the Falcon, one of a handful of non-white superheroes on the big screen:

“I feel like kids don’t get race. We preach so much to kids that you can be anything you want to be, and then we follow it with ‘except,’ and we have to leave that ‘except’ off.”

Tell us, who would you most like to see become the next Captain America? Bucky or Falcon? As always, be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments section!
