The Real Reason Captain Marvel Didn’t Appear In Avengers: Age Of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron concluded with a new team of heroes being assembled by Captain America and Black Widow. With Iron Man deciding to take some time away from the team, Thor returning to Asgard, Hawkeye back with his family, and The Hulk M.I.A., the new roster included Scarlet Witch, The Falcon, The Vision, and War Machine.

Avengers: Age of Ultron concluded with a new team of heroes being assembled by Captain America and Black Widow. With Iron Man deciding to take some time away from the team, Thor returning to Asgard, Hawkeye back with his family, and The Hulk M.I.A., the new roster included Scarlet Witch, The Falcon, The Vision and War Machine.

However, Captain Marvel was originally supposed to be part of this new team of Avengers, with Marvel deciding at the last minutes not to include her (the VFX plates used for the Scarlet Witch’s arrival were intended for Captain Marvel).

Talking at a recent Q&A to promote the home video release of the sequel, producer Jeremy Latcham explained the reasoning behind this:

“In really early development there was a notion of there’d be a ton of new people. And then it was like, ‘Well we haven’t really introduced them, we don’t know where they’re gonna come from,’ and Joss kind of did not love that idea. It was an early discussion, and then that kind of became just Captain Marvel, and then that felt weird just to have one new person.”

Kevin Feige elaborated on that by explaining why introducing Captain Marvel in the same way the rest of these New Avengers were would ultimately have been detrimental to her upcoming solo movie:

“And also the subtext was, what does Cap say, ‘They’re not the ’27 Yankees’—well if Captain Marvel is there, what are we saying about her? It needed to be [that] certainly Wanda and Vision, I think to a lesser extent Falcon and Rhodey need to learn what it means to be a team, even the most dysfunctional team in history.”

Tell us, are you disappointed that Marvel decided against giving Captain Marvel the chance to shine in Avengers: Age of Ultron? After all, had she been introduced there, she would have no doubt taken on a major role in Captain America: Civil War, too.
