Kevin Feige On Possibly Releasing More Than Three Marvel Movies A Year

Up until now, the most we've had from Marvel Studios in a single calendar year is two movies. That looks set to change in Phase 3 though thanks to returning characters and the debuts of new ones, like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange, but as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, could we reach a point where we're seeing as many as four or five releases per year from them?

Up until now, the most we’ve had from Marvel Studios in a single calendar year is two movies. That looks set to change in Phase 3 though thanks to returning characters and the debuts of new ones, like Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange, but as the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to grow, could we reach a point where we’re seeing as many as four or five releases per year from them?

Talking at a recent event to promote the home video release of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Kevin Feige commented on just that and revealed how bringing back the Blu-ray exclusive One-Shots could help the studio in the future.

“We talk about [One-Shots] a lot actually, because when you have tables like that (lots of potential storylines, most unexplored in the finished film), and we go, What are we going to do with Howard (the Duck)? What are we going to do with Cosmo? We should do a one shot with Michael Pena. I mean, the universe is big. We’re moving up to three movies a year and I’m not sure how much beyond that we can go so the one shots are great for: oh we have this great idea, wouldn’t it be fun to see… We talk about it a lot. We’re a relatively small team. We’re comfortable doing three movies a year so its just about finding the time and the place. But we have a backlog of ideas.”

The One-Shots were a great way of expanding certain stories, with the Agent Carter short leading to the character getting her own TV series and others serving to flesh out the cinematic universe and what’s to come in it with future releases.

Even so, many fans would still like to see an increase in Marvel’s output, but it sounds like that’s not on the cards just yet. Two films which are on the cards though are Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, and Feige confirmed that we should expect some big casting announcements for those and a number of their other releases before 2015 is over.

“I think it will be pretty quickly. There will be a slew of casting announcements over the next few months. Before the end of the year on those two films and some other films.”

Here’s hoping we finally get some Captain Marvel casting news, eh? For details on why she didn’t make it into the final cut of Avengers: Age of Ultron, be sure to click here, and share your thoughts on the above comments in the usual place.
