Hotel Transylvania was a hit for Sony Animation back in 2012, grossing an impressive $360 million worldwide. The sequel has also gotten off to a strong start in North America, with a haul of $50 million after just four days of release, so a third instalment of the franchise reaching the big screen at some point in the next few years seems very likely indeed.
Well, while we wait for an announcement on that, we now know that Genndy Tartakovsky won’t be at the helm. He directed the first two instalments (which both had a voice cast made up of pretty much the entire cast of the Grown Ups franchise, with names like Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Steve Buscemi, and David Spade), but revealed the following in a recent interview:
“Hotel Transylvania 3’ is going to happen without me. Two is enough. I have a lot of other ideas, and I kind of have to express them and have them come out.”
It’s hard to fault Tartakovsky for wanting to move on from the Hotel Transylvania franchise in order to follow some of his passion projects, something he can now do with two big hits on his hands. What that will be remains to be seen, though he is expected to now start developing Can You Imagine? at Sony, a movie described as, “a fantastic journey through one boy’s imagination.”
